My Thoughts on NFL Cheerleaders

My Thoughts on NFL Cheerleaders

Cheerleaders, you either hate them or you love them. They are a staple of both high school and collegiate football teams but what about the N.F.L.? Out of the 32 N.F.L. teams only 8 teams choose not to have cheerleading squads. A few of the teams are the Steelers, Browns, Lions, Giants, and Packers. Now the Steelers did have Steelerettes from 1961 to 1969 when the Rooney family decided that they did not like the trend (sexual) that cheerleading was taking in the league and so they disbanded their squad.

So is this a good thing or a bad thing? At the high school and college level, cheerleading is still competitive and athletic, but somewhere between college and professional, cheerleading has become feminized and eroticized. This is where the controversy has a risen, does a team send out scantily clad women onto a football field to entertain a crowd during halftime. Some teams have chosen not to go down that pomp-pomp road while others, like the Cowboys, have. We all know that the N.F.L. has continuously used woman and sex (and beer) to sell their product. Now is that wrong, who knows? Football is a “man’s sport” and well men like woman, sex, and beer. If you are in the business of selling tickets and filling stands (a majority will be men). Why not have those things while a game is going? This was never a problem until last month when Ines Sainz, a reporter from TV Azteca in Mexico, walked into the Jets locker room were some very tight pants and revealing shirt. Guess what – men where men and they whistled and catcalled at her. Plus there is the whole drama with Favre and his scandalous text messages. So has having to much sex in football finally caught up with the league? I don’t know about that. I think it’s just men being men.

Personally I don’t see the point of the cheer squads they have. Nor do I get why they deserve trading cards. I don’t remember what product they were in, but I purchased 2 hobby boxes last year with them in.Heck during halftime, I’m going to the bathroom, filling up my chip bowl and getting a drink. So it’s not like I am actually watching them. But what I do have an issue with is women in the men’s locker room. Male reporters are not allowed in the women’s locker room. Why should women? Especially after a game when guys are super pumped up from a win. The guys should be allowed to whine down before reporters interview them. I’m not being sexist (there are some great female sport reporters) but I just think it’s says men’s locker room for a reason. Keep it that way. If it’s going to be an issue, then keep out all reporters and interview after the guys have showered. Back to cheerleaders – pretty girls who shake what the good lord gave them. I couldn’t care less if a team has them. I don’t ever watch them as I care more about the game.

Pack Searchers – A Thorn in Sports Card Collectors Sides

Pack Searchers – A Thorn in Sports Card Collectors Sides

It’s a rare sports card collector that doesn’t have at least one story about pack searching. To be honest, up until recently I didn’t even know what it was. Thankfully I read about what it was somewhere over at the cardboard connection and got clued in – couldn’t recall the exact story but it was somewhere in their baseball cards section.

The thing about breaking wax is that everyone stands the same chances of pulling hits or misses from any given pack or box. However pack searchers undermine this fair play. By any one of dozens of different methods, they’re determined that they’re going to find the packs with the big hits and leave the crap for everyone else. They’re gonna get more than they’re money’s worth. So what if you get the shaft in the process?

These winners sometimes have a streak of altruism. They wanna share in their good fortune, in their wondrous finds. These are the golden souls that offer “hot packs” for auction. When I see these packs for auction, I face a serious decision: is the pack searcher the bigger dirtbag, or is the person who buys hot packs the one we should be blaming? Because make no mistake, buying these “hotpacks” just aggravates the problem. The seller might have found the jersey pack, but who really wants to bust the pack for a George Parros jersey or a Dustin Byfuglien autograph? Heck, let someone else buy it and take the risk, and pocket the profit by selling it unopened on eBay. Meanwhile, the buyer creates demand – a market – for searched packs.

Greed and selfishness ride rampant in this hobby. It takes a bit of that to be a collector, and makes for good haggling as long as its in moderation. Those things don’t trouble me, nor do the much trouble anyone else. Pack searchers? That’s a whole different game. That’s such singleminded greed that all rules come secondary to self-gratification.

The hobby can do without it. Pack searchers, hotpack sellers, or hotpack buyers please just leave the hobby. The hobby would be better without you.

My Newfound Obsession With Working Out

My Newfound Obsession With Working Out

So I was at the gym today and I got to thinking, why do us guys think it is hot to have these super built arms but have these chicken legs? Now I am by no means built like a muscle head. That could be because instead of spending sixty minutes on just my arms, I actually spend equal time on all my major muscle groups.

Now I know I’ll never look like John Cena, but I would like to have some definition. Unfortunately, if Olive Oil had a brother I would be it. Building muscle mass does not come easily to me. My only one redeeming quality is that I’m not ass-less. Men with big arms, chicken legs and no ass, just make me embarrassed to call myself a man. So I got the butt and totally don’t have chicken legs (thank you to my cycling instructor).

It’s not too much to ask to want mini-me John Cena definition. That’s why I started looking into protein supplements, figuring it would be easy to find one that “fit” me. Boy, there are so many types of supplements (Met-Rx, Myoplex, UltraMet, etc.) and so many different prices ranges. I’m thinking I might be going to the Vitamin Shoppe. Of course, if I could just get off my lazy butt and actually cook a meal with high protein content. Need to figure something out as I am tired of spending my life as Olive Oil’s long lost brother.

Why all the Cena comparisons?  He is my favorite wrestler and I recently got the chance to meet him for a second time and get his autograph.

Topps confirms error in 2010 T206 Baseball

Topps confirms error in 2010 T206 Baseball

Topps has announced that Stephen Strasburg aka the best prospect ever will not be appearing in 2010 Topps T206 as originally indicated. This is because  Strasburg is  ineligible to appear as a Rookie Card in products. If heis called up to the Washington Nationals before Topps 206 ships, he will be inserted into the product.  Until that time, collectors can find Strasburg’s prospect cards in 2010 Bowman Baseball.

SportsCardboard.com: We’ve Got Liftoff!

SportsCardboard.com: We’ve Got Liftoff!

This is the first blog I’ve ever started so this is all quite new to me especially since I’ve never been much of a computer geek. But one of my buddies helped me set this up and I’m really looking forward to givng it a go.

I am not sure how to start things out so I will just briefly introduce myself and my reasons for writing this blog. My name is Marcus Hawkins and I am a 23 year college student who is a lifelong Red Sox and Celtics fan (yes I grew up near Boston). I’ve been collecting sports cards for like 3 years now, mainly baseball and basketball as I am not really into the NFL or NHL.

I have recently gotten more and more involved in tha hobby over the last year. No particular reason really, other then its a lot of fun. I am just getting the whole computer thing down and been reading several card blogs that inspired me to enter the bloggingsphere for myself. I am going to talk about pretty much anything that I feel like but will try to keep it on topic to sports cards and more specifically baseball cards and basketball cards so that I actually gain a reader or two for my blog.

So thanks for visiting and come back soon!
